People in California have suffered from severe drought and the crops there have been affected for the last several years. The droughts devastating the plains of California would persist for a quite long period of time if it were to be caused by climate change. According to the news reports, a tight water restriction is going to be put into effect there. This news reminded me of the harsh droughts in Texas in 2011 and 2012.

Many districts of most cities in the US have city gas. City gas in the US has become more common than that in Japan. It has sometimes come to my knowledge that a gas explosion wrecked a whole building in an urban district of the US. Once in a while, dozens of houses connected with a gas line in a block were demolished by a chain of gas explosions due to a cause. The periodical maintenance checkups and works on the gas lines are indispensable for avoiding these accidents but their costs are far from insignificant.

Got up at six-thirty in the morning. Ate a piece of bread for breakfast, a bowl of Japanese noodle soup for lunch, and a Japanese meal for dinner. A temporary return to midwinter cold brought a chilly rain here.

From the perspective of establishing the systems of the cities well advanced in preparations to minimize the baneful effects of future disasters, it seems that the further expansion of city gas utilizing either natural gas or hydrogen gas isn't a good idea, especially in a seismic area and tornado belt. Although the use of the existing public utility of gas is currently advantageous because of its relatively low price if the costs for necessary maintenance works aren't considered, for the future I prefer the total permeation of the electric cables while imposing reasonable restrains on carrying liquid hydrogen and hydrogen gas in the residential districts. It should be safer to set up the hydrogen gas stations and the hydrogen gas power stations only outside the residential districts.

Got up at six-thirty in the morning. Ate a piece of bread for breakfast, a bowl of Japanese noodle soup, and a dish of Italian pasta for dinner. It snowed slightly this morning, and then the snow turned into sleet. It has stopped sleeting this afternoon.

A statue representing the upper part of the full-scale body of Godzilla was created on the roof of a new building as a sightseeing attraction in an amusement area of Shinjuku, Tokyo. It looks better than other sightseeing statues in Tokyo. However, it's uncertain whether the installation of this giant statue will help improve public decency around this area by drawing the attention of foreign tourists or not.

An Airbus A320 passenger airplane of Asiana Airlines bungled a landing at the Hiroshima airport tonight. Fortunately, there is no fatality. This accident is similar to a previous awkward landing of an Asiana's Boeing 777 airplane at the LAX. Strange things can happen repeatedly.

The numerical forecasting method has been applied to weather prediction covering the periods of the next century, next decade, next year, next few months, and next few weeks setting aside the accuracy, but it's somewhat reliable only for the period of the next few days at the change of seasons. The advancement in meteorological observations has improved the accuracy of the initial values necessary for numerical forecasting, and that in the computing systems has enabled a large-scale simulation, so the accuracy of weather prediction has improved certainly. However, it isn't satisfactory, as many feel. Further improvement in the meteorological observations and the computing systems should be the proper path.

Seeking accuracy, the numerical equations describing the ocean currents circulating from the sea surface through the bottom have to be adopted in numerical forecasting. The influence of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere should be taken into account. The flows of the prevailing dusty winds should change the possibility of rainfall. Pollution of the atmosphere may also change it. The fluxes of various kinds of cosmic rays may influence the formation of clouds in the middle to upper layers of the earth's atmosphere. The potential influence of cosmic rays on weather conditions may be modeled reasonably but it's very difficult to model the incidents of cosmic rays from the sun because of the difficulties in the numerical forecasting of the sun's activities with a high degree of accuracy. It's impossible to predict accurately the most incidents of cosmic rays coming from many other sources in outer space, except those following the observations of the supernova explosions relatively close to the earth. There exist not a few other factors that affect the weather conditions. To make matters more complicated, fluids such as the atmosphere and oceans tend to undergo fluctuations originating from a minute localized change somewhere, which is difficult to predict.

The zone of life of human beings has ever been limited to the surface of the earth. Until now, the only exceptions to it are the rooms in the space stations orbiting around the earth. The people of great wisdom may be able to foresee the future major occurrences that will remain unperturbed by the omnipresent factors entailing uncertainties and the near future occurrences that will take place before being significantly perturbed by these factors. The continuous advancement in the computer should improve people's capability to estimate the possibilities of future occurrences in advance. Weather prediction utilizing the numerical method is a case specialized to deal with the part of our environment on the earth. The influence of human activities on weather conditions isn't so significant currently but it's increasing gradually. Things have become more complicated even in our environments.

A drone with some red stripes on the white ground made a baffling landing in the garden of the White House a few months ago. A light gyrocopter with the US Postal Service logo carrying a letter of protest made an intentional landing on the garden of the US Capitol for the purpose of a demonstration against the government several days ago. Today, a black drone carrying a bottle filled with some radioactive materials was found on the roof of the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Japan. That drone wasn't as large as a statue of the upper part of Godzilla installed on the roof of a building in Shinjuku, but it's really radioactive according to the news sources. The escalation of the improper uses of the drone and other small flying machines may lead to something very serious before long if no measure is taken. Because the divergences of the ways to use the airplanes and the radioactive materials should be the matters with fateful ties between the US and Japan, this sort of mischief bordering on terrorism hurts people's feelings.

My hand-held electronic dictionary isn't working properly, as written a few months ago. Its state has been getting worse and worse. Today, the condition of the electrical contact between the connector of the printed circuit board and the flexible cable of the keyboard of my electronic dictionary was carefully checked after unscrewing some screws and opening its case. The metal parts of the connector and/or the flexible cable may have become rusty. It seems that the formation of dew on these parts caused these faulty contacts due to rusting during cold seasons for the last few years.

By scouring the contact surfaces of the foil electrodes of the flexible cable gently and adjusting the bending of the flexible cable in order to shift the location of the contacts slightly, my electronic dictionary was restored to its original state. If the same malfunction recurs soon, some sort of surface active agent has to be applied to the contact surfaces of both the connector and the flexible cable.

Started reading "Transport in Nanostructures" written by Prof. David K. Ferry and Stephen M. Goodnick again. Because this book is the first edition published about two decades ago and the field of semiconductor engineering has ever been progressing rapidly, there's no denying that the contents of this edition have gotten somewhat behind the times, because of the lack of coverage of some recent interesting mesoscopic systems as a matter of course. Although some descriptions of their applications (e.g. the evaluation of the scaling limit of the Si MOSFET, which is probably applicable only to a very low-temperature operation) are quantitatively questionable, most contents describing the fundamentals of the electron phenomena in some mesoscopic systems are still interesting.
In order to understand sufficiently the properties of some sorts of mesoscopic devices explained in this book, the valuable productions of the quantum field theory are necessary. "The Quantum Theory of Fields" by Prof. Steven Weinberg is the most comprehensive, as far as I know.
