Got up at eight-thirty in the morning. Ate a bowl of rice porridge for lunch. Went out shopping at a grocery store this afternoon. Ate pieces of Central Market's pizza for dinner.

Rainfall this morning has somewhat reduced the risk due to drought.

Today, CERN announced that its experiments detected the events suggesting the presence of a new subatomic particle, which could be the Higgs boson. Currently, however, the existence of the Higgs boson hasn't yet been verified officially. Only the real truth revealed should be reported.

The following books in English that deal with the several areas of condensed matter physics at the graduate school levels are what I would like to read next for the purpose of my self-enlightenment and the translation of the technical terms in these areas in my brain from Japanese into English. In my senior year at Science University of Tokyo, I studied the basis of solid-state physics under Prof. Kei Yosida at his one-year seminar. When I specialized in surface science at the graduate school of Tokyo Institute of Technology, I read several Japanese textbooks on advanced quantum mechanics and surface physics. Long after graduation, I read 'Theory of Magnetism' written in Japanese by Prof. Kei Yosida. This book comprehensively explains the theories about the electronic and nuclear properties of magnetic substances.

Got up at seven forty-five in the morning. Ate a bowl of rice porridge for lunch, and a Japanese meal for dinner. Dark rain clouds began to cover the sky this evening. Small hail kept impinging on the roof and walls of our house for a while. However, no noticeable damage was done to our property.

After graduating from university and entering a company in the semiconductor and telecommunication industries, I have read many Japanese textbooks, English textbooks, and English technical papers on the physics of semiconductor devices and processes. Therefore, the technical terms in these areas are retained in both languages in my memory. In general, these areas can be categorized into the application of solid-state physics, which I studied at universities long ago. It's my belief that the researchers and developers who engage themselves in the area of technology should have knowledge ranging as wide as possible, not only in their expertise in technical areas but also in basic sciences, marketing, and other worldly matters. It's highly desirable that all of the matters studied should be understood, but there is no necessity to memorize them by rote. It's enough to be able to refresh their memory when necessary.
It seems that an expert who has no common sense in the area of technology can't stand out conspicuous. On the other hand, however, in the area of the basic sciences especially at purely academic places, an expert who has no common sense may often be able to avoid being criticized. Here, instead of widening their intellectual horizon, deepening their research in a limited area is expected.

Obviously, there are some differences in the courses of the difficulty between assimilating wide-ranging knowledge in order to improve the device or to invent the new one best in terms of various aspects, and delving deeply into a topic in order to discover the scientific truth. It's hard to tell which is more difficult. It should depend upon the aptitude and the situation of either a developer or a researcher.

Got up at seven forty-five in the morning. Ate a bowl of rice porridge for lunch, and a Western-Japanese meal for dinner.

My original intention about three decades ago was to become a scientist who should seek the scientific truth as a profession. However, my situation didn't allow me to continue to set my mind on becoming a researcher for the scientific truth.
Reading the books on condensed matter physics that I listed three days ago will enable me to promote wider, deeper, or newer understandings. This should build up the armor of basic knowledge for a researcher who can deal with technology development more flexibly.
When the conditions are satisfied, I may be able to delve deeply into a science topic, at least as a hobby or self-enlightenment, after reading a number of the latest technical papers related to a topic.

Day after day of rainy weather had relieved slight damage from drought. The dry ground due to drought drank in plenty of rain. Currently, the lawns and the trees in our yards are in healthy condition.

With age, phlegm tends to obstruct the throat. I gargle my throat with Listerine daily in order to avoid the increase in phlegm due to tonsillitis and so on.

A DSL router at home has been coaxed for the last few months. This morning, its AC/DC adapter got broken. The regulated DC voltage from the output of the AC/DC adapter, which is supposed to meet the standard voltage of 5 volts, oscillates about 4 volts with an amplitude of 0.5 volts. However, it seems that the router itself doesn't malfunction.

During dental flossing tonight, the ceramic dental crown came out from the abutment attached to the screw implanted into the socket of my tooth #7. Fortunately, there was nothing wrong with the crown that had fallen on the washstand, and the abutment and the dental implant that were left in my mouth. Currently, my smiling face reflected in a mirror has a certain charm. It may be a consciousness of the mutability of the world.

Today's maximum temperature was 99 degrees F (37.2 degrees C).
