According to the recent advertisements by Exxon Mobile, the US students' rankings in terms of mathematics and science are the 25th and 17th, respectively. The Japanese students' rankings in these fields are better but that in English may be below the 30th. The trend of these rankings indicates the degrees of their academic proficiencies at some primary educations on average. At this stage, it may reflect the difference in the productivity and the internationalism of the general public between the two countries. It seems that this is quite a commonplace opinion.
In both countries currently, because of the difficulty, the unfavorable reputation, and the less remuneration based on merit, people have grown disenchanted with becoming excellent scientists or engineers. The appeal of these professions to people has diminished because the excessive advancements of non-performance-related promotions have increased the wasteful spending extensively in their countries and have accelerated the outflows of huge investments to the countries with cheap and plentiful laborers as a result so that the number of the positions of these professions in their counties has decreased. Obviously, this tendency should have made their national strengths decline.

Went to see the film under the title of 'Prometheus 3D' at the Regal Gateway 16 this afternoon. If you like the classic SF thriller film 'Alien (1979)', the new film 'Prometheus' will be strongly attractive to you, probably. Some touchy elements were dealt with in this R-rated film.
I believe that, in 2093 or 2094, the farthest space that humankind may be able to reach is the surface of the planet Mars or the satellites in our solar system at most. There is no possibility that humankind will encounter either its creator or other intelligent extraterrestrial life on Mars though a small possibility that humankind will discover some sort of microbes or their fossils on Mars can't be denied. Unlike the Greek god Prometheus, the creators of humankind in this film are very intolerant. This film is located with various suggestions that the humankind have made mistakes in the same ways as its creator because of their nearly identical DNA. The script was wisely written to suggest the existence of the creator of humankind's creator in order to avoid probable criticisms from both the spiritual side and the scientific side.
Although there are many proposed hypotheses about the origin of life, none of them has been scientifically proven. A large majority of biologists nowadays don't search for the creator of life.

Stopped by at a few grocery stores on our way home. Ate pieces of Central Market's pizza for dinner.

In terms of the development of natural resources, numerous asteroids located between Mars and Jupiter are more attractive than Mars because of the unnecessity of deep digging. Probably, some space agencies have already identified many potentially rich asteroids of gold, platinum, uranium, and so on.
Although these asteroids are located at a farther distance from the Earth than Mars, a round-trip between the Earth and these asteroids is probably easier than that between Earth and Mars because of less frequency of the escape from the planet's strong gravitational field. However, it isn't so clear that humans should visit there not for the purpose of the exploration of a new field but only for the purpose of resource development at such small celestial bodies. The challenge to the world record may be one of the motivations. The acquisition of the right of ownership of these rich asteroids for their future mining may be another.
According to online news sources today, the European space agency may be planning to send some astronauts to the asteroids.

Today's maximum temperature was 101 degrees F (38.3 degrees C).

A leaded hat may come into fashion for the next few years or longer. It sounds heavy. Both the roof of a car reinforced with a thick lead plate and the roof of a house plated with thick lead may also become popular. It seems that the installation of these sorts of roofs could cause serious environmental problems. This joke isn't witty.

Got up at eight o'clock in the morning. Ate a bowl of rice porridge for lunch. Went to see the movie 'Moonrise Kingdom' at the Regal Arbor Theater this afternoon.

This film was exhibited to audiences at the Cannes International Film Festival this year. My wife wanted to see this comedy including some factors such as a parody of 'Harry Potter', 'The Hunger Games' and a Davy Crockett movie, and targeting mainly the audiences who spent their days as a child or a parent in the US in the 1960s. Because this film contains full of humorous materials about the customs and fashions in those days, we are unable to get some points of the humorous story. The film tells an escape journey of a twelve-year-old boy and girl, who are labeled by their acquaintances as mentally disturbed, from the pursuing parties including the girl's parents through two small islands in Rhode Island, while incurring the small-scale versions of divine punishments seen in the Bible coming on each other's heels, after their private wedding.

Overhauled the electric fan on the ceiling of the covered patio of our house this afternoon. Removing some beehives from the inner part of the fan and lubricating the pivot helped reduce noise when it's rotating.

A swelling on my right eyelid has already subsided.

Stayed at home for the entire day. The weather today was unstable. So far, however, the northwest Austin area has received no rainfall. Several weeks of drought accompanying heat waves have been affecting the grasses and trees in our yards gradually.
