Got up at nine forty-five in the morning. Ate a bowl of rice porridge for lunch, and a dish of Italian pasta for dinner.

I am writing this wearing a gray cotton shirt with a Henley neck and three buttons, which I bought about two and a half decades ago. This Hanes shirt is made of a durable cloth that wears well. The photo that shows me in this shirt can be found in my diary written on November 3, 2008. This photo was taken in Japan in the summer of August 1996. I take good care of my things so that they last quite a long time. This manner of mine was cultivated when I lived alone.

Restarted 100 sit-ups. Now, my daily exercises consist of a set of 100 sit-ups, a set of isometrics, and a set of moderate stretching.

In order to maintain my extensive knowledge of the semiconductor devices cultivated in semiconductor physics and engineering for thirteen years and to improve my English pronunciation skills, I practice by giving a presentation on my previous works in this area at home for about thirty minutes is still one of my recent daily habits.

In order to stave off senility and to prepare myself to progress to more advanced levels in solid-state physics, I read two textbooks on this field in the English language for senior courses at an undergraduate school and a master's course at a graduate school has been started since last Friday. It's verified that my knowledge of mathematics necessary for these levels can be easily refreshed because it's one of my fields of expertise. It seems to me that my power to understand has been sharpened since graduating from school more than two decades ago. Still, both my intellectual horizon and knowledge have been expanding. However, some decline in my power of memory can't be denied in my middle forty, compared to my teens and twenties. Considering several factors, my best days as a researcher in terms of the power of the brain seem to be forties and fifties. What books I will read next for the purposes of a hobby and enlightenment have already been decided for the most part.
Hopefully, my power of intelligence will not noticeably decline before my eighties.

As a result of the election, Mr. Francois Hollande succeeded Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy as French President today.

Stayed at home for the entire day. Severe thunderstorms brought rain to the Austin area early in the morning.

Probably, the original thermostat housing of the engine of my wife's car is made of heat-resistant plastic. About 2 years ago, it got cracked due to the deterioration of the heat and vibration from the engine. At that time, a repairman of a WV dealer repaired it carelessly by just filing its crakes with resin. Unfortunately, it's still leaky especially when the engine speed is above 4,000 rpm. Placed an order for a genuine thermostat housing and some related parts with an online auto part shop today.

This evening, a severe thunderstorm brought rain to here again. The power supply in the neighborhood was cut off for about an hour.

Recently, I realized that I need glasses for close reading. Placed an order for a pair of tortoiseshell wire-rimmed oval reading glasses for travel use and a pair of tortoiseshell plastic-rimmed trapezoid reading glasses (2-tone) for home use with an online reading glasses shop today. The strengths of the lenses of both eyewear are weak (+1.00 and +0.75). One of the frames of pairs of glasses that I chose is a product found in the Ernest Hemingway Eyewear Collection. Many types of frames in good classic taste for medium to large-size eyeglasses are available in this eyewear product line.
The name of a pair of reading glasses in this eyewear collection that I bought is "A Farewell to Arms". "A Farewell to Nuclear Arms" should match my belief better than that. At the present time, the necessity of conventional weapons, especially defensive weapons, can't be denied. The world with no weapon is only a dream.

It drizzled all day long.

The possibility of realizing such an ideal world, that is a peaceful world with no weapon, a fully automated world with no labor, a communist world, or a world with other extreme idealism, may be intensified to some extent when world federalism comes true far way off in the future. This is because the advancement toward the world of federalism may cover up the faults of these idealisms. It's my belief that the future unified world isn't only a dream. Obviously, it should take time for the miracle to be realized.
However, even in the future unified nation, its security units will still need to maintain some degree of arms for the maintenance of public order, needless to say. The works essential for the advancement of human knowledge and society should continue. The meritocracy, the competition, and the personal capitals may remain in some degree in order to avoid serious sluggish.

Intel Corp. gave the reserved clock frequencies to the first releases of its 3rd generation chip series known as "Ivy Bridge" utilizing the 3D transistors. It seems that Intel is currently trying some strategies to attract attention to not only the reductions in power consumption but also the performance gains in the future technology nodes by scaling the dimensions of the transistors further by virtue of the multiple-gates device configuration. Because no other semiconductor company is capable of releasing a computer chip with 3D transistors for a while, setting the performance of its new generation chip series to moderate levels at the beginning should be wise.

Well-known political struggles for the acquisition of the most prestigious prizes covering several fields grow more brisk at this season of the year.

The power supply in the neighborhood was again cut off by a severe thunderstorm for a while this evening.

The auto parts that I placed an order for this Monday were delivered this afternoon. The thermostat housing and other related parts were attached to the engine of my wife's car this evening. The amount of the engine coolant was adjusted to an appropriate level by pouring a small amount of the coolant into the coolant tank.

American children's author and illustrator, Mr. Maurice Bernard Sendak passed away at the age of 83 on May 8. My wife and I saw the movie that brought to the screen Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" at the Bullock IMAX theatre about three years ago. In the film version, the wild things have their names. The name of the wildest thing is Carroll.
Mr. Carroll Hall Selby passed away at the age of 89 today. He was a racer and a founder of Carroll Selby International Inc. One of the iconic embodiments of American Wild at Heart died at the hospital.

Two pairs of the reading glasses that I purchased online this Tuesday were delivered. The shapes and the colors of the frames of these reading glasses are similar to those of the eyeglasses for a nearsighted person I wore two to three decades ago. These eyeglasses fit comfortably to my face. Even a pair of smaller eyeglasses fits well because of its flexible spring hinges. It's more desirable that an option of the anti-glare/reflection coating is available for the lenses of its high-end product lines.

The following email was sent to Fortune Magazine through its internal webmail system this evening.

To: Customer Service of Fortune Magazine,

Although I have never ordered any subscription to the magazines for the last few years, the amount of $59.95 for an annual subscription fee to the Fortune magazine was charged to my credit card account on April 29, 2012. Today, I canceled it immediately online. I felt relieved that Fortune Magazine gave its word that a refund for $59.95 was being processed.

Because Fortune Magazine shouldn't know the recent number and expiration date of my credit card, Fortune Magazine should be unable to renew my subscription automatically, even if its automatic renewal program is activated for some reason or other. It seems to me that someone has been up to some mischief.

Please cancel the automatic renewal program to my subscription if it's currently active. Would you also delete information on my credit card from my account at the Fortune magazine by way of caution?

Regards,
Yasuhito Shiho

My wife realized today that an unknown company, the name of which is DOINK Media LLC, billed us a monthly fee for its identity theft protection service through eBillit and AT&T a few times this year. My wife and I have never requested such a service from any telecommunication company.
My wife sent both eBillit and AT&T an email of complaint in order to stop its service and to let DOINK Media LLC refund the payments that we made without realizing it.

Looked after our front- and backyards this afternoon. Went out shopping at grocery stores this evening. Verified that a slight leakage of the coolant from the thermostat housing of my wife's car had already stopped. Ate a BBQ meal for dinner.

Theoretical astrophysics in cosmology has attracted me since my childhood. Astronomy involves astronomical observation as a major source of experimental data. Beautiful high-resolution astronomical photographs taken by using the space telescope often fascinate me. Such images stir up my imagination of the vast depths of space.
However, astronomical observation has never been my hobby in my life because any low-resolution astronomical photograph taken by an amateur astronomer doesn't draw my attention. Seeing the entire sky sprinkled thick with innumerable stars through a clear atmosphere with the naked eye is more tasteful than observing the stars with a small astronomical telescope on the ground.

Confirmed that the lenses of the reading glasses that I bought last week are the right strength for my eyes. Reading a book in small letters containing lots of numerical formulas with superscripts and subscripts held up close to my eyes doesn't try my eyes too much when I wear a pair of reading glasses with a strength of +0.75. Needless to say, a pair of reading glasses is designed to help a farsighted person to see the close things well. It's like a magnifying glass. It isn't designed to see a middle distance or a long distance.

Reading some of the textbooks that I read previously was quite comfortable because all of the contents described in them were once understood. For the purpose of staving off senility effectively, it seems that I need to read something newer and/or more difficult. However, I should give way to impatience. Refreshing my knowledge of mathematics fully is the primary purpose of this attempt.

The strength of the reading glasses of +1.00 somewhat tries my eyes after reading for about an hour. The lenses of +0.75 are the right strength for me currently.

Probably, a surge in the electrical current through the power cable due to lightning in a thunderstorm led to a malfunction of one of the air conditioning in our house about two weeks ago. The red LED on the control board was indicating dim fast-flashings. This symptom can't be found in its error code table. This morning, after exchanging the two control boards, one of which was supposed to be broken and the other of which was supposed to be functioning, it was confirmed that the control board of one of our furnaces has stopped functioning since the week before last. Placed an order for a new control board with an online parts shop.

The air conditioning system of my wife's car was refilled with some amount of R134a refrigerant. It's verified that it can blow cold air in the inside of a car now. A pair of goggles should be worn while working in order to protect one's eyes against the possible spray of the coolant.

Today's maximum temperature was 92 degrees F (33.3 degrees C). Because the air conditioner for the first floor of our house is out of order now, the mugginess was enough to make us feel uncomfortable this afternoon.

Went out shopping at a grocery store this evening. The balance of the engine of my wife's car was acceptable when driving on the highway at an engine speed above 4,000 rpm. Its air conditioning system worked efficiently. There was no leakage of the engine coolant from its thermostat housing at all.

The new control board for the repair of one of the furnaces of our house that I placed an order for with an online parts shop four days ago has not been delivered yet, though it left Houston for Austin early last night. It may be delivered next Tuesday, according to the UPS tracking system.

The new control board of the furnace that I bought at an online shop a week ago was delivered this evening. The control board was installed in the furnace of the air-conditioning located in the attic of our house. There, it's as hot as if I had been in a sauna.

Ate a Japanese meal for dinner in the air-conditioned room.
